Long ago, the young king Louis XV married the Polish princess Marie Leszczynska, who asked her father, King Stanislas , if she could take the his pastry chef to France with her. This is how M. Stohrer moved to Versailles. He remained there for five years, and invented the baba au rum, first called "ali-baba". He then opened a boutique at 51, Rue Montorgueil next to the city marketplace. It was the fishmonger's street of Paris, the only street where shoppers could buy oysters, which attracted noblemen and bourgeois, amateurs of fine food.
Through the years the Stohrer establishment grew to such an extent that in 1864 it called upon Paul Baudry (Winner of the Grand Prix de Rome and decorator of the Garnier Opera house) to decorate its boutique with sumptuous wall paintings. Eleven years ago Pierre Liénard and his associate François Duthu, purchased the establishment and chose to make their own pastry and catering products. It is one of the last Parisian pastry shops where you can still buy the genuine "puits d'amour".
